What is Don't Wordle?
Don't Wordle is the reverse version of the familiar five-letter puzzle. It is also commonly described as Anti Wordle or Avoid Wordle; those names refer to the same basic gameplay: there is one hidden word, but finding it is the failure condition. Your score is the number of valid guesses you survive before the answer finally catches you.
The green, yellow and grey tiles look familiar, but here they become obligations. Once a letter turns green, every later guess must keep it in that position. A yellow letter must remain in the word but move away from that position. A fully grey letter becomes unavailable. Repeated letters follow the exact scoring rules, including maximum letter counts revealed by mixed yellow-and-grey feedback.
How to play Don't Wordle
- Enter any accepted five-letter word to create the first set of constraints.
- Keep every green letter fixed in the same position.
- Use every required yellow letter again, but move it away from known yellow positions.
- Do not reuse a letter shown to be completely absent.
- Choose a different legal word each turn and postpone the hidden answer for as long as possible.
Locked green letters are placed into the next row automatically, and unavailable keyboard letters are disabled. There is no six-row ceiling: new rows are appended directly to the page. If you cannot find another move, choose Give up and confirm once more to reveal the answer without accidentally ending a long run.
What do the remaining-word numbers mean?
The large counter above the board is exact, not an estimate. After every turn, the game checks the complete five-letter dictionary and counts the unplayed words that reproduce every green, yellow, grey and repeated-letter clue in your history. The number printed to the right of each completed row preserves that moment, so you can see exactly how quickly each guess narrowed your escape route.
The pressure bar provides the same information at a glance. Green means many legal moves remain, amber means the route is tightening, and red means only a small branch of the dictionary survives. The exact number remains visible because it is more useful than a generic hard-mode warning.
Don't Wordle strategy
A strong opening is different from a normal Wordle opener. Classic play rewards revealing the answer quickly; Don't Wordle rewards preserving a flexible vocabulary. An information-rich guess can force too many letters and shrink your future choices. Watch the count beside each row and learn which patterns leave a broad branch of legal words.
Greens are especially restrictive because they permanently occupy a slot. Yellows can become awkward too: every future word needs the letter while avoiding its known positions. When the counter turns red, examine common endings, plurals and repeated-letter patterns before entering the only obvious answer.
Frequently asked questions
Are Don't Wordle and Anti Wordle different games?
In this site they are two names for the same reverse-word-game idea: obey all previous clues while trying not to enter the hidden answer. We use Don't Wordle as the page name and retain Anti Wordle in the explanation because many players know the game by that name.
How do you win Don't Wordle?
There is no final victory row. The aim is to build the longest legal streak before you are forced to enter the hidden word. The game records completed rounds and keeps your personal best in this browser; voluntarily giving up does not replace that best.
Is there a daily limit?
This page is unlimited, and the New word button starts a fresh hidden word as soon as a round ends. Your unfinished round is saved locally so a page refresh does not erase it. For one shared challenge each day, play Don't Wordle Daily.
Why was a dictionary word rejected?
An accepted word can still be illegal for the current round. It may move a green, leave out a required letter, reuse an absent letter or contradict a duplicate-letter clue from an earlier row. The temporary message identifies the first broken rule.
Is this an official Wordle or Anti Wordle game?
No. This is an independent reverse word game made for Wordle Unlimited. It is not affiliated with The New York Times or with the creators and publishers of other similarly named games. For themed vocabulary, browse our topic word games.
