How to play First Word

  1. Look, then mark. Ten words hide in the grid. Mark the first one you notice: drag across it, or tap its first letter and then its last.
  2. Read your word. The first word you mark is yours, and it answers the line above the board with a short reading.
  3. Find the other nine. The clues appear now, each showing a first letter and the word's length. The clock runs from your first word.

Easy boards run across and down. Medium adds diagonals. Hard also hides words backwards. If you mark part of a longer hidden word you get a nudge, not a refusal. On a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space on the first and last letter.

Today's First Word

Everyone playing on the same calendar date gets the same board: one theme, one 10Γ—10 grid, ten hidden words. Mark the first word you notice and it becomes your word for the day, with a one-line reading that answers the headline above the grid. Then the clues appear, each showing a first letter and the word's length, and the clock runs until you have found all ten.

The level follows the week. Monday and Tuesday are Easy, with words across and down. Wednesday to Friday are Medium, with diagonals. Saturday and Sunday are Hard, with words hidden backwards too. The 28 themes take turns, and the same theme never comes up two days in a row.

A new board at local midnight

Your marks, your first word and your time are saved, so a refresh picks up where you left off, and a finished board stays finished for the rest of its day. Solve on consecutive days to grow your streak. If you are signed in, a finished daily also counts on the leaderboards.

For fun, not for science

The reading for your first word is a small treat, like a fortune cookie. It is not a personality test, and the word you spot first depends on where your eyes happen to land. Compare with a friend: you will usually see different words in the same grid.
