How to play Minesweeper
The field hides a fixed number of mines. Reveal a cell and it shows how many mines touch it - a blank cell touches none, and opening one clears its whole neighborhood. Use the numbers to work out where every mine must be, flag those cells, and reveal everything else. Reveal all the safe cells and the board is swept; reveal a mine and it is over.
Minesweeper strategy
Start from the marked cell
Every board marks a starting cell that always opens a clear area, and every board is verified to be solvable by deduction alone from that start. Begin there and the whole field falls to logic - no fifty-fifty endings.
Read the 1-2 patterns
When a 1 and a 2 share a wall of hidden cells, subtract: whatever satisfies the 1 uses up part of the 2, and the difference pins the remaining mine exactly. Most middlegame progress comes from comparing two overlapping numbers instead of staring at one.
Flag, then chord
Once a number has all its mines flagged, click the number itself to open every other neighbor in one stroke. Chording is dramatically faster than opening cells one by one - just make sure the flags are right, because a chord through a wrong flag detonates.
Difficulty levels
Beginner (9x9, 10 mines) teaches the number patterns, Intermediate (16x16, 40 mines) is the balanced classic, and Expert (30x16, 99 mines) is the wide-field endurance test. Your best time is tracked per difficulty, and on phones the Expert field pans inside its frame while the page stays put.
Share a challenge
The challenge panel under the board links the exact minefield you are playing. Send it to a friend and they get the same mines and the same marked start, making solve times directly comparable. For one shared board a day with a calendar streak, play Minesweeper Daily.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of Minesweeper?
Reveal cells one at a time. A revealed number counts the mines in the eight cells touching it, and revealing a cell with no mines nearby opens the whole clear area around it. Reveal every safe cell to win; revealing a mine ends the round.
Which difficulties can I play?
Beginner is a 9x9 board with 10 mines, Intermediate is 16x16 with 40 mines, and Expert is the classic 30x16 field with 99 mines. On narrow screens the Expert board pans sideways inside its frame.
Can every board be solved without guessing?
Yes - from the marked starting cell. Every bundled board is checked offline by a solver and included only when pure deduction from that opening reveal clears the field. Open somewhere else first and you are on your own.
How do flags work?
Right-click a cell on desktop, long-press on touch, or switch on the flag button beside the smiley to flag with plain taps. Flags block reveal clicks, and the counter on the left shows mines minus flags placed.
What is chording?
Clicking a revealed number that already has that many flags around it opens all its remaining neighbors at once. It is the fast way to clear a board - but a wrong flag makes a chord detonate, exactly like the original.
Are there hints?
Yes. The Hint button under the board marks a cell that is certainly safe with a pulsing green dot - up to 10 hints per board. Reveal the marked cell and keep going.
Can I play with the keyboard?
Yes. Arrow keys move between cells, Space or Enter reveals, F plants a flag, and H asks for a hint.
Can a friend play the same board?
Yes. Every board has a fixed seed. Copy or share its challenge link and the recipient gets the same minefield, mines and starting cell, so times are directly comparable.
Is this the official Minesweeper?
No. This is an independent, fan-made game in the classic desktop minesweeper style, not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft or any other publisher.
